Coffee Connection

Now that you are convinced that you should take a deeper dive into networking, you may be wondering how and why to schedule a Coffee Connection.

The purpose of the Coffee Connection is to learn about another person, profession, industry, or scope of work. It’s a fancy title for meeting for coffee and learning more about each other personally & professionally.

You’re not alone if this feels extremely weird and slightly terrifying. But, RELAX! People email others they don’t know well all the time. Honestly, you met this person at a WEW meeting. So, you aren’t complete strangers. They are expecting an email. Bonus, this email is from YOU!

After setting up a Coffee Connection (they usually last 30 minutes or less), do a little pre-game prep. Know a bit of her industry and position. Visit her company’s website or maybe do some light LinkedIn profile stalking. What questions do you have? This helps both of you feel comfortable, avoid silences, and keeps the conversation flowing.

Because we all need examples, here are a few questions you could ask.

  1. How did you get started in your career? I’d love to learn more about what you do and the core components involved.
  1. What does a typical day at [company] look like for you? What do you like most about your job? What’s the most challenging part of your job?
  1. What’s the next chapter for you in your career?
  1. How can I help your business? This is the Louis Vuitton of questions.

Since you initiated the conversation, you should guide the conversation. Remember to have equal speaking time during the conversation and end on time. No one should monopolize the conversation. Time is our biggest asset, so remember to honor the agreed time allotment.

Side note, remember that you aren’t there to sell your products or services. Instead, create a network to help you both succeed.

After your Coffee Connection, always follow up the chat with an email thanking her for her time and reiterating what you learned about her business. Tell her how she can connect with you online and encourage her to stay in touch and keep you informed about anything new in her company.

Finally, check back in with her from time to time. Your Coffee Connection should mark the beginning (not the end) of a relationship. Circle back to everyone in your network periodically to see how they are doing and tell them about your business developments.

Follow these tips, and we’re confident you’ll not only have some of the best chats of your professional life, but you’ll also see how Coffee Connections level up your business.

We offer fireside chats as an informal conversation between the speaker and the interviewer. The unique format allows those in attendance to feel immersed in the discussion.

The conversational approach of a fireside chat format means it is naturally more engaging than a traditional speech. The aim is to enliven audiences in a conversation that merges stories with succinct questions and answers.
